Why Is Hip Hop So Important?

From the South Bronx, New York, Hip Hop goes beyond rhythms and imagery to bring forth the visceral embodiment of an underrepresented cultural context. Started in the streets of New York, at a time where poverty and lack of funds for music programs in the New York City schools, the urban youths came together with break beats from the Dj's, break dancers and Graffiti artist. Hip Hop became the outlets and created unity in the though neighborhoods of New York. Hip Hop was also Rooted firmly in African & Hispanic heritage and is a pure form of expression for people whose voices might otherwise be drowned out by the noise of an automated, uncaring world. Hip Hop is visceral, confrontational and real, amidst a backdrop of self-indulgence and ignorance. Hearkening back to the wisdom of ancestral griots, Hip Hop is the vessel through which artists can reshape their world.
